Historic Manchester
Manchester’s origins date back to 1673, when English pioneers established a settlement on the Podunk Indians’ camping grounds. Several decades later, it was part of Hartford and referred to as “Five Mile Track.” After the location became a part of East Hartford, the residents renamed it Orford Parish.
By 1790, Orford Parish was a growing cluster of settlements with churches, schools, a thriving business community, and a population of 1,000. Manufactures included glassworkerss, a grist mill, and other commercial ventures. One Orford Parish business even produced gunpowder used in the Revolutionary War.
In 1823, Orford Parish won its campaign to become a separate town. It was incorporated under the name Manchester. In 1935, the city chose its motto,“City of Village Charm” from a winning contest entry. Manchester will celebrate its 200th Anniversary in 2023.

1
CONTACT A REAL ESTATE AGENT
Contacting a Real Estate Agent when you first learn that you’ll be relocating to Manchester is crucial. When you contact Brooke Group Real Estate, we take immediate steps to assist you in your search. We assess your home-buying requirements and use our resources to locate compatible properties.
2
SHARE YOUR HOME-BUYING GOALS WITH YOUR AGENT
You probably know what you want even before you begin your search. Once we understand your home buying goals, we focus on looking for specific property types and targeting those that meet your specifications.
3
VISIT BEFORE RELOCATING
You get a better feel for a home when you take a tour. An in-person visit allows you to see important details you might not notice in a print or online ad. We recommend extending your stay for a day or two so you can get a feel for the town and the people who will make up the community.
If you can’t visit before relocating to Manchester, online listings often provide media presentations. Many include high definition photos, walkthrough videos, or 3D virtual tours. The right media presentation could make you feel confident enough to make a choice without seeing a property in person.
4
HIRE A PROFESSIONAL MOVER
DIY moving is an economical option but it can easily cause “relocation burnout”. Relocating to Manchester (or anywhere!) may often be stressful. Movers help you reduce that stress. They pack everything, load everything, and drive it to your location. When they arrive at your destination they put everything exactly where you want it.
5
SETTLING INTO YOUR NEW TOWN
If you’re relocating to Manchester, you’ll need to establish new personal and professional relationships. Here are some of the contacts you’ll need as you settle into your new home:
- Manchester School District
- Manchester School Readiness Council
- Manchester Physician Search: WebMD

These are just a few of the contacts you’ll need as you adjust to your new community. To learn more about local services, visit the city’s, “Department List” page.
6
SELL YOUR CURRENT HOME
Arranging to have your home sold is one of the most difficult things you’ll have to do before relocating. If you’re moving because of a job, you won’t likely have enough time to sell your home. You might not even have enough to get it on the market!
When you contact us about relocating, we can also connect you with one of our associates in your area. You’ll have a Real Estate Professional working with you on both ends to make your home buying and selling go as smoothly as possible.
